'Homeland' casts Broadway star Victoria Clark in big surprise role

A Broadway veteran has been cast in a surprising and pivotal role on Showtime's Homeland.

EW can exclusively report that Tony-winning actress Victoria Clark (stage versions of Sister Act, Cinderella) has shot a top-secret part on the show.

We're going to reveal who she plays below, but first here's a big spoiler warning: Do not keep reading if you don't want to know about an unexpected key character coming this season.

Clark will play ...

(Seriously, don't read if you don't want to know ... )

Clark will play ...

Carrie Mathison's (Claire Danes) mom.

We're not allowed to reveal when Carrie's mom appears, or why, or the extent of her role on the show. But this is obviously a pretty significant addition to Carrie's storyline. Previously, James Rebhorn played Carrie's father on the show's first three seasons, but the actor passed away earlier this year.

Homeland just wrapped filming its fourth season, which has drawn praise from critics and fans for creatively rebounding with a season largely set in the Middle East. The next episode airs Sunday night.
