Lewis Hamilton Takes Formula One Title Over Nico Rosberg
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - The Formula One season ended at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday as Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes won the race and took the 2014 drivers' title, having won more than twice the number of races as his nearest challenger but in danger of losing the title because of a new rule.
Hamilton started the race with 10 victories to five for his teammate, Nico Rosberg, but with an unpopular rule changed that awarded double points for the final race only, Rosberg had nearly twice as many chances as usual to take the title, including by finishing as low as fifth if Hamilton failed to finish in the points.
As it turned out, a steely, determined Hamilton did everything necessary not only to win the title but to win the race, while Rosberg ran into one technical problem after another on his normally dominant Mercedes and finished the race in only 14th position.
Rosberg started the race on pole, but Hamilton passed him by the first corner, and then on Lap 25 of the 55-lap race, Rosberg's technical problems began, as his Mercedes lost the use of its energy recovery system and limped on to the end of the race.
'I'm going to take it one day at a time. This is the greatest day of my life,' Hamilton said.
Then referring to his first title, he added: '2008 was a special time in my life, and the feeling I have now is way, way above that.'
The two Williams team drivers finished second and third, with Felipe Massa in second and Valtteri Bottas in third, helping the Williams team to finish the series in third place, ahead of Ferrari in fourth and behind Red Bull in second.
Rosberg started the race on his 11th pole position of the season, to only seven for Hamilton, but as the British driver said after Saturday's qualifying session, he won more races and that was what counted.
His 33rd victory and second title make Hamilton the second most successful driver currently racing in Formula One.
