Mockingjay Part 1: Movie Review
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is, according to the critics, dark, brooding, and less action-packed, but after seeing this Movie twice (once as a Fanboy, the other as a critic), I can say that without a doubt, Mockingjay Part 1 is my favorite installment of the franchise. I say this with no lightness, having read all the books, seen all the movies, been part of a Hunger Games Podcast, and having been one of Lionsgate's Hunger Games fans of the week.
So the question remains, why?
1. A New View of Panem
In the latest installment of this film we see the Revolution begin, we see Panem, and we see the impact Katniss has, in a way that the books do not show. Though this installment is far less action oriented, our eyes are open to the power of one person, and the adrenaline rush of Catching Fire is replaced by intensity. Mockingjay Part 1 will leave you on the edge of your seat in a way that none of the other movies will.
2. True to the Book
First and foremost, I am a fan of the books, so when Hunger Games lacked Madge, and when Catching Fire lacked Plutarch's Mockingjay Watch (seriously, how cool would that have been?), I was disappointed, but Mockingjay Part 1 captures every detail from the books, right down to our favorite orange feline. Many critics are saying that splitting the Movies is a money grab, due to corporate greed, but I disagree, splitting the movie in two will leave fans of the books satisfied.
3. The Most Powerful Film
Before seeing Part 1, I'll admit that I found it difficult to truly loathe the Capitol, yes they held this terrible games where kids fought to the death, but I always thought of them as ignorant idiots. Part 1 shows the ruthlessness of the Capitol and gives you this deep hatred towards them, and a deep pride in the Rebellion.
No one can forget in the first installment of the film the cut to District 11 when they rioted, and the power in the footage. Mockingjay Part 1 is full of moments like that where fearless people stand behind the Mockingjay and fight against the Capitol. We also see this power in Katniss and how she has become a powerful leader.
If you have any questions on whether or not to see the latest installment, (to paraphrase Caesar Flickerman), whoever you are, whatever you're doing stop, because you are going to want to witness this. Go and see Mockingjay.
I give the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, 9.5 out of 10 stars.
