No. 2 Wisconsin Scrapes By After a Georgetown Scare
Sam Dekker scored 17 points, and Nigel Hayes's acrobatic tip-in with 20 seconds left capped his 15-point day as No. 2 Wisconsin rallied in the second half to beat Georgetown, 68-65, on Thursday in the Battle 4 Atlantis semifinals in Paradise Island, Bahamas.
The Badgers had not trailed in the second half this season, but they found themselves down, 53-44, with 11 minutes 36 seconds left. A 22-6 run put Wisconsin (5-0) up for good, and the Badgers could finally exhale when D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera's 3-pointer rimmed out as time expired. Smith-Rivera, who was 5 for 5 from beyond the arc until the game's final shot, led all scorers with 29 for Georgetown (4-1).
Wisconsin faces Oklahoma in Friday's title game.
KANSAS 76, RHODE ISLAND 60 Perry Ellis scored 17 points, and No. 11 Kansas beat Rhode Island in the opening round of the Orlando Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Ellis had 11 points in the opening 20 minutes to help Kansas (3-1) cruise to a 43-25 halftime lead.
Frank Mason III added 12 points for Kansas, which has a pair of victories since a 72-40 loss to No. 1 Kentucky on Nov. 18.
E. C. Matthews scored 20 points for Rhode Island (3-1).
Women
SOUTH CAROLINA 67, WISCONSIN 44 Tina Roy scored 11 points and Jatarie White added 10, and No. 1 South Carolina beat Wisconsin in the Junkanoo Jam in Freeport, Bahamas.
It was South Carolina's first game as the No. 1 team in the country. The Gamecocks (4-0) will face No. 22 Syracuse on Friday.
The Gamecocks led, 15-14, before going on a 16-4 run to close the half. South Carolina scored the first 10 points during its burst, capped by Roy's 3-pointer.
Wisconsin (1-3) closed to within 11, but South Carolina mounted a 12-3 run to put the game away. Michala Johnson scored 13 to lead the Badgers.
SYRACUSE 69, E. CAROLINA 58 Alexis Peterson scored 19 points, matching her career high, as No. 22 Syracuse beat East Carolina and advanced to Friday's game against South Carolina in the Junkanoo Jam.
Syracuse (4-0) led by 47-27 at the half, thanks to 44-percent shooting and six 3-pointers - against just one for the Lady Pirates (5-1) in the period. Brianna Butler and Briana Day scored 13 points each.
