Report: Jazz, Alec Burks agree to 4

The Utah Jazz have reached an agreement with guard Alec Burks on a four-year, $42 million extension that could reach $45 million with incentives, according to Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.

It's OK if you're first reaction is, 'HUH?' The fourth-year guard averaged 14.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game last season, shooting 45.7 percent from the field and 35.0 percent from the 3-point line. He's 23 years old, athletic and incredible at getting to the rim and drawing fouls, but he needs to keep improving his spot-up shooting and his defense. The Jazz know Burks' work ethic better than anybody and they're betting on this happening.

The sheer dollar value seems surprising on the surface, but I'd argue it's rather reasonable. Utah has itself a starting-caliber shooting guard, even if he wasn't given that role until this year. The franchise also has itself a wing player with all the upside in the world -- Burks has shown signs as a playmaker, and his size and length means he has the potential to become an excellent defender. Sure, there's risk that this doesn't happen, but there's also risk in leaving it, Burks having a huge year and receiving a monstrous offer in restricted free agency. After all, Utah just wound up paying Gordon Hayward $63 million.

Fun fact: this is the two-year anniversary of the Toronto Raptors' somewhat shocking decision to give DeMar DeRozan a four-year, $40 million extension two seasons ago. Derided at the time, it's worked out in the franchise's favor. DeRozan played himself into that contract, and has since played in an All-Star Game and represented his country at the FIBA World Cup. Burks' statistical profile now is a bit better than DeRozan's was then.

Of course, the other variable here is the NBA's new television contract and the forthcoming bump in the salary cap. There's a relative dearth of solid players at Burks' position, and this might end up being the going rate for a slightly better-than-average starter. It's tricky to evaluate what the Jazz did, but this really isn't crazy.

Now, let's watch him embarrass Kobe Bryant again:
