The San Antonio Spurs will be without their leader on the bench for potentially a couple of games, as head coach Gregg Popovich is set to undergo a 'minor medical procedure.'

Mike Monroe of the San Antonio Express-News provided the details, noting that assistant coach Ettore Messina will make history in Pop's stead:

Dan McCarney of the San Antonio Express News provides comments from Messina:

Popovich, widely regarded as the best head coach in the league, has led the Spurs to five NBA titles during his 18-year stint with the team. His ability to get the most out of his players and create mismatches is unrivaled, and it will be interesting to see how San Antonio fares without him.

In the meantime, Messina, a Euroleague legend who was hired in July, will have the opportunity to showcase his head-coaching chops around the league.
