Cardinals pitcher and Dodgers outfielder engage in odd standoff
Players hold their ground until umpire orders them off field.
NLCS Game 6 in St. Louis didn't start until umpire Greg Gibson ended one of the hardest fought battles of the postseason. Dodgers outfielder Scott Van Slyke and Cardinals pitcher Joe Kelly were engaged in a stand-off, holding their ground outside their teams' dugouts from the Star Spangled Banner through the first pitch.
Similar standoffs sometimes occur in college games, but usually involve the full teams. In this case, Kelly and Van Slyke apparently took it upon themselves to represent their teams - much to their teammates' delight.
For what it's worth, Van Slyke grew up in the St. Louis suburbs, and his father Andy reached the World Series with the Cardinals in 1985. Kelly grew up just outside of Los Angeles.
