Twitter now lets you receive direct messages from anyone
7 minutes ago
In a change now rolling out across Twitter, users can enable their accounts to receive direct, that is, private, messages from anyone they want. Previously, both parties had to follow each other for private correspondence to be enabled, but now - assuming you want it - you can open your account up.
Since it's an 'opt-in' sort of thing, you don't have to worry about being suddenly spammed by a bunch of crazed fans and potential business partners. Twitter hasn't officially confirmed the change, but sightings around the Internet show that it's happening. Among the first people to notice the change was a marketing consultant named Jim Connolly, who tweeted a picture of the new setting:
Will it reduce the amount of person-to-person chatter visible in people's public feeds? Will it make the shady side of social media even shadier? Will it make Twitter spam even more unbearable than it already was? Or will it serve as a useful tool for people who may not already be in lock-step to just talk privately? We'll just have to see.
