VIDEO: Ford Shows Off Self
Parking in a tight spot is the worst, right? Thanks to new technology being developed by Ford, you may never have to do it again.
The car maker posted a YouTube video (below) showing off new automated parking technology its engineers are working on that could let you park your vehicle with just the push of a button. Better yet, you won't even need to be sitting behind the wheel for the technology to work.
The technology, called Fully Assisted Parking Aid, is currently in the prototype phase, and researchers have successfully installed it in a real car. It controls steering, gear selection, and the vehicles forward and reverse motion to allow for push-button parking.
'The next step is to make it available to drivers as a feature on a production vehicle,' the car maker said in the video. Ford did not provide any insight into when that might happen.
The new technology can also be useful when exiting a small space, Ford said. Instead of manually maneuvering your car out of the spot, you can just press a button and the car will drive itself out.
Ford discussed self-driving technology at last month's IFA trade show in Berlin, where executives also touched on the use of Wi-Fi to communicate with other cars on the road about potential problems ahead.
Besides Ford, several other companies are working on autonomous vehicle tech. Google, which has shown off self-driving technology, is reportedly looking to produce its own car, while Nissan recently promised to have similar technology in multiple vehicles within seven years. Most recently, Mercedes-Benz teamed up with Nokia to develop smart maps intended to spur the development of self-driving cars.
In May, U.S. transportation officials released early guidelines for the development of self-driving cars, including recommendations for lawmakers who are writing laws governing the technology. Audi and Toyota also showed off some autonomous vehicle tech at this year's CES, but the technology is still in its infancy and solid rules for how it should be handled are still a few years out, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
