Roundup: Packers place tight end Jermichael Finley on IR

Jermichael Finley's season officially is over.

The Green Bay Packers put the talented tight end on injured reserve Tuesday, a little more than two weeks after Finley suffered a scary neck injury that sent him to the hospital.

Finley, 26, spent days undergoing in the intensive-care unit but wasn't expected to need surgery and has said he intends to play again. He tweeted Monday he was beginning rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

If Finley does resume his career, it's unclear whether it'll be with the Packers. The two-year, $13.968 million extension he signed in February 2012 expires after the season.

In 70 regular-season games over six seasons, Finley has 223 catches for 2,785 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Also Tuesday, the Packers put linebacker Sam Barrington on injured reserve and activated tackle Derek Sherrod from the reserve/physically unable to perform list.

Sherrod, 24, was the Packers' first-round draft pick (32 nd overall) out of Mississippi State in 2011. He appeared in five games as a rookie, then suffered a broken leg and hasn't played since.

The Packers may need help along the offensive line. Guard T.J. Lang suffered a concussion in Monday's game.

Despite quarterback Aaron Rodgers' broken collarbone, the Packers passed on claiming their former backup quarterback, Matt Flynn, who passed through waivers and is now a free agent.

With the extra roster spot from placing two players on IR, the Packers likely will sign quarterback Scott Tolzien off their practice squad.

INJURY UPDATES: Broncos activate Walton Complete list for all 32 teams

The Denver Broncos have their intended starting center back on the active roster.

The team added J.D. Walton to the 53-man roster from the physically unable to perform list Tuesday just before the deadline to either activate him or place him on injured reserve.

To make room for Walton on the active roster, the Broncos placed backup guard John Moffitt on the reserve-left team list. Moffitt, acquired in a trade with the Seahawks in August, did not return to Denver after the bye week. He has been active in only two game this year.

Moffitt had planned to spend the bye week in Seattle.

Walton was the Broncos' starting center from the time he was drafted in the third round in 2010 through the first four games of 2012 when he suffered a broken ankle. He returned to practice this spring but an infection was discovered in the ankle that required another surgery.

The Broncos then re-signed Dan Koppen, who had replaced Walton last season, but Koppen suffered a torn ACL early in training camp.

Panthers bring back Hangartner

That left guard Manny Ramirez as the Broncos' starting center despite having never played the position before. Ramirez has started all eight games at center.

The Carolina Panthers have announced they've re-signed free agent guard/center Geoff Hangartner. The 6-5, 305-pound Hangartner returns for a third stint with Carolina after being released in training camp.

He's started 83 games during his nine-year NFL career.

The move comes after Jeff Byers became the fourth Carolina offensive guard to be placed on injured reserve this season. Byers injured his foot on Carolina's win over Atlanta Sunday. The Panthers previously placed starting guards Garry Williams and Amini Silatolu and rookie Edmund Kugbila on IR.

Hangartner played for Carolina from 2005-08 before signing with Buffalo as a free agent. He spent two years with the Bills before returning to Carolina in 2011.

Hangartner could start Sunday at San Francisco at right guard if Chris Scott (knee) is unable to play.
