Apple vs. Samsung: the Battle of the Bans Continues

What is the popular thing to do when battling for market share against a strong competitor in the smart phone and mobile device industry? File a lawsuit and request that competitors have their products banned from the country. At least this has been the strategy of Apple and Samsung over the last couple of years as the embattled companies scramble for a foothold over each other. What is the cause of the furious battle between the companies? Infringement; both companies claim that the other has stolen technology, features, and more.

The latest round of disputes comes from Samsung, claiming Apple violated three mobile messaging technology patents. Samsung requested that South Korea ban the iPhone and charge Apple a $95,000 fine. The South Korean courts dismissed the charges brought forth by Samsung, stating the technology that Apple used is common. The game of 'tit for tat' between the two companies has resulted in rulings for and against them in the past.

Last year a South Korean court ruled in Samsung's favor; the taste of victory was short lived for the company as last month a U.S. court ruled against the company resulting in a $290 million dollar fine. Apple has regarded the charges Samsung brought against the company as ridiculous, thanking the Korean courts for rejecting Samsung's claims and standing up for 'real innovation'.
