Wireless carriers agree to help unlock phones

Major U.S. wireless carriers on Thursday agreed to help consumers unlock their cellphones after contracts expire, allowing them to switch providers and continue using the devices, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Facing pressure from regulators, Verizon Wireless, AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T), Sprint Corp. (NYSE: S) and T-Mobile US Inc. (NYSE: TMUS) agreed to provide instructions on how to modify or unlock phones after customers' contracts end.

Still, users may not be able to switch some phones to new carriers, since the companies use different network technologies.

But the agreement provides more transparency about what consumers can do with their devices.
