Cal App for Android Exits Beta, Manages Your Calendar and Looks Good Doing It
The new Cal app from the folks at Any.do reached Android a few weeks ago as a semi-closed beta, but today is the official reveal. This new calendar app is available to everyone and it's 100% free. Cal does all of the same things that other apps do, but it might do them a little more elegantly. It also ties in with the fabulous Any.do to-do manager.
Cal's interface is easy to get the hang of and get around in. If you've ever seen Fantastical for iPhone, Cal has a similar vibe. The top of the UI has a one-week calendar that you can tap around in to see your various events come up under it. Swiping left and right also changes days. The main interface has an expanded full calendar view accessed with a quick swipe down. You can tap on any event to go to the detail page, which is pretty attractive in its own right. Cal presents you with a series of cards for the main event details, attendees, notes, location, and more.
Adding new appointments is pretty slick in Cal-just tap the plus button up top and start typing. You can add items to any of the calendars connected to your device and it works just like you added it to the stock Google Calendar app. You can also drop in locations, reminders, and invite people. Again, the invitations plug into Google and can be confirmed with Cal. The app does a good job of keeping you from doing too much typing as well-it relies on large, finger-friendly buttons to do things like set reminder times and repetition.
The way popup reminders are handled in Cal is neat. Perhaps a little intrusive, but that's kind of what you want. A panel slides up to cover the bottom quarter of your device's screen with the event details, as well as the names and avatars of people you've invited. It's easy to dismiss, but makes sure you know what's going on.
There were a few spots of lag in the beta release of Cal, but the final build seems more than fine. The UI is overall clean and easy to figure out-the pretty backgrounds pulled from Flickr don't hurt either. Cal is a great app, and you should give it a shot.
