Nets' Pierce Out With Fracture in Shooting Hand
The banged-up Nets were dealt another blow Monday as forward Paul Pierce learned he fractured a bone in his shooting hand.
The injury, a nondisplaced fracture of the third metacarpal, is expected to keep him sidelined for two to four weeks, the team said. The injury occurred in the first half of the Nets' 114-95 loss Friday night to the Houston Rockets.
Pierce, 36, has struggled to find a rhythm this season, his first with the Nets after being traded from the Boston Celtics over the summer. In 15 games, he is averaging 12.4 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists, while shooting 36.8 percent from the field and .268 from 3-point range.
He was slowed in the preseason after jamming a big toe and strained a groin muscle two weeks into the regular season. He spoke openly about the difficulty of finding his niche on his new team, a process that can now be paused for up to a month.
The Nets have stumbled to a 5-12 record and failed to put their star players on the court at the same time. Deron Williams (sprained left ankle), Andrei Kirilenko (sore back) and Jason Terry (sore left knee) did not practice Monday. Brook Lopez and Kevin Garnett were given a day off to rest.
Williams will not play Tuesday against the Denver Nuggets and is doubtful to appear against the Knicks on Thursday, the team said.
