Sherman, Schwartzman share in the 'Mary Poppins' love
Check out an exclusive clip of the new Blu-ray that goes behind the scenes of 'Saving Mr. Banks.'
Nearly 50 years after he put 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocius' and 'Chim Chim Cher-ee' into the pop-culture vernacular with his brother Robert, Richard Sherman is still a stalwart champion of all things Mary Poppins.
And on the new Blu-ray edition of the 1964 Disney classic out Tuesday, Sherman, 85, has a meeting of the mutual admiration society with him and Jason Schwartzman, the actor who plays him in the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks.
Banks (in select cities Friday, opening wide Dec. 20) chronicles Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) and his efforts to bring author P.L. Travers' Mary Poppins to the screen, including bringing Travers herself (played by Emma Thompson) to California for the full-court press for the movie rights. She then, much to her chagrin, becomes a part of the creative team of the film, including songwriting duo Richard and Robert Sherman (B.J. Novak).
An extra on the Mary Poppins Blu-ray titled 'Becoming Mr. Sherman' shows some behind-the-scenes material from the Saving Mr. Banks set with Richard Sherman and Schwartzman working at the piano on scenes and a sit-down interview with the pair.
'As I watched you reenacting this very, very, very meaningful time in my life, I can't tell you how much it meant to be that it was so real and so sincere and so very, very heartfelt,' Sherman tells the young actor.
'I wanted to do right by you,' Schwartzman replies, 'and because you were right there, I remember I would say, 'Richard, would you have done this?' And you would say, 'Oh, it's this. It was like having a guardian angel helping.
'It was one of the greatest experiences of my life.'
