Grading the Phoenix Open

Kevin Stadler accomplished a couple of firsts at the Phoenix Open on Sunday.

He got his first PGA Tour win in 239 starts and he cemented his legacy for April; he will head to the 2014 Masters and become (with his dad, Craig) the first father-son combo to play Augusta.

Stadler had a crazy final-round 68 that included a double bogey that was waylaid by a cactus and a horrific putt by Bubba Watson at the last hole to give him the win.

Stadler made a fine par on the 72nd hole of the tournament after missing a 12-foot putt, but then Bubba whiffed on that 5-footer above, turning to his caddie after the putt and saying 'it went that way' -- indicating the way opposite the way Watson putted it.

Stadler told CBS' David Feherty he would have loved to have closed but in the end he didn't care how he got the win.

'I would have liked to have made that putt there and won that way,' said Stadler. 'It's been a long time coming so I'll take it any way I can get it.'

According to the PGA Tour media Twitter account, Stadler joins his dad as the ninth father-son combo to win tournaments in PGA Tour history and the first since Bill Haas got his first PGA Tour win in 2010.

Stadler scored well all week but the birdies left him on the back nine Sunday. He made one on No. 17 (along with Watson) but that was it.

'It wasn't pretty. I hit a lot of good shots and a lot of ugly shots,' said Stadler.

But in the end it was enough.

Kevin Stadler is a Denver Broncos fan. Sunday is shaping up to be an all-time day for him.

Bubba Watson's final hole was the full Bubba Watson Experience. Wayward drive, overshot the green, crazy weird chip that hit a rope and rolled close, and a missed putt to go to a playoff followed by an upset look at his caddie. Yup.

Webb Simpson finished 10th at 11 under but it could have been far better. A 72 in the second round left him out in the cold in Phoenix.

Phil Mickelson gets a 'C' for his play on the course (3 under for the tournament), but an 'A' for his aerial display at No. 16 on Saturday.

Brandt Snedeker had quite a tournament. He went 70-64-72-79 to finish T61. Needs to throw some rounds together over the next two months to be ready for Augusta.

This was Lee Westwood's third PGA Tour tournament of the season and first missed cut. Looked dandy after a first-round 67 but a second-round 75 meant a missed cut by one stroke.
