ANAHEIM, Calif. - Los Angeles batting coach Don Baylor suffered a fractured right femur, the Angels said, during a bizarre ceremonial first pitch injury before Monday night's Mariners-Angels season opener here and will undergo surgery Tuesday.

Baylor was injured while receiving former outfielder Vladimir Guerrero's ceremonial first pitch moments before gametime. He was immediately taken to UC Irvine Medical Center for tests and an evaluation.

Baylor, 64, had returned to the Angels this season after starring for them as a player from 1977-1982.

It is the second freak injury to happen at home plate in Angel Stadium since 2010. In May of that year, Kendrys Morales shattered his right ankle while leaping on the plate amid a crowd of Angels following a walk-off home run. Morales' ankle was broken so badly he missed the rest of 2010 and all of 2011.
