The Pirates announced the injury Sunday on their official Twitter page, wishing Taillon a 'speedy recovery.'

Taillon elected to have the surgery to repair an injury to the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, the team announced.

Taillon, the second overall pick in the 2010 amateur draft, was assigned to minor league camp after appearing in two games this spring training for the Pirates.

The 6-foot-6 Taillon posted a 3.73 ERA and recorded 143 strikeouts over 147 1/3 innings in 26 combined games last season at Triple-A Indianapolis and Double-A Altoona.

Taillon was ranked earlier this offseason as baseball's No. 27 overall prospect by ESPN Insider Keith Law.
