Mark Teixeira Placed on 15

TORONTO - The Yankees were hoping that after last year's plague of injuries derailed their season, they could avoid that fate this year. But health is already an issue, four games into the season.

Mark Teixeira, who strained his right hamstring on a seemingly innocuous play Friday night, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday after he showed no significant improvement overnight.

Teixeira, who will turn 34 on Friday, said he hopes to return as soon as he is eligible, on April 20. The Yankees called up the backup catcher Austin Romine to replace Teixeira on the roster, and Manager Joe Girardi said Kelly Johnson would be the regular first baseman in Teixeira's absence, giving the rookie Yangervis Solarte more time at third base.

'I play through anything and everything,' Teixeira said before Saturday's game. 'But the team's being smart here. If it were Oct. 30, I'd play the last game of the season. But there's no reason to try that right now. I'm hoping it's only going to be two weeks.'

Girardi said Francisco Cervelli, a catcher, could play some first base. Dean Anna is also a candidate to play third and first.

Teixeira suffered through a lost season in 2013, playing in only 15 games because of a strained tendon sheath in his right wrist. He was healthy through spring training and was optimistic that he would avoid the disabled list in 2014, so when he strained a hamstring going after a harmless foul ball Friday, he was fuming with frustration.

'I wanted to break everything in this clubhouse last night when I came in here, but I respect the Blue Jays organization more than that,' he said. 'I felt like I did everything this off-season and this spring to get my body in position to play all season.'
