Marquette expected to hire Duke assistant Wojciechowski as head coach

The Duke associate head coach Steve Wojciechowski is expected to be named the next coach at Marquette later today, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Wojciechowski, 37, is a former star point guard at Duke and has been long considered in Duke circles as the likely replacement for Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski. But with Krzyzewski saying publicly that he'll stay for five more years, Wojciechowski took his own head coaching job.

He'll replace Buzz Williams, who led Marquette to five consecutive NCAA tournament appearances before falling short this season. Williams went 139-69 in six seasons.

Wojciechowski established himself as one of the country's top young assistant coaches in his 15 years at Duke. He also worked extensively with USA basketball during that time.

He leaves for a job with one of the most lavish budgets in all of college basketball. Marquette spent more than $10.7 million on basketball last season, according to data from the US Department of Education. With its budget, history and facilities, Marquette is considered one of the best jobs in the Big East.
