Nearly 3 million people enrolled in Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program in February, a dramatic increase that was likely spurred by the March 31 deadline and improvements in state and federal insurance exchanges and reporting.

Figures released Friday morning by the Obama administration show that between Oct. 1 and the end of February, a total of 11.7 million people were determined eligible for the Medicaid and CHIP programs.

In the 48 states that provided enrollment data for February 2014, states reported about 62.3 million individuals were enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP.

Among states that adopted the often controversial Medicaid expansion and were in effect in February 2014, Medicaid and CHIP enrollment rose by 8.3% compared to the July-September 2013 baseline period, while states that are not expanding Medicaid reported a 1.6% increase over the same period
