Mets win 6

NEW YORK - The Mets' first challenge proved to be a game-changer.

Instant replay overturned an out call in the ninth inning, setting the tables for Ike Davis' walk-off grand slam in the Mets' 6-3 win over the Reds on Saturday at Citi Field.

With a runner on first and no outs in the ninth, Anthony Recker bunted to first baseman Joey Votto, who threw to second. Juan Lagares was originally called out, but a review of two minutes and 14 seconds ruled that Lagares was safe, putting runners on first and second with no outs. It marked the Mets first challenge of the year.

With the bases loaded and no outs, Davis hit a walk-off grand slam to right field.

The Mets trailed 3-2 entering the ninth as Brandon Phillips hit a two-run homer in the eighth off Dillon Gee. Phillips' homer ruined an otherwise fine outing by the opening day starter. Gee allowed just three runs on six hits in 7 1/3 innings, striking out four.

Gee cruised through the first seven innings, allowing just four hits in that span. The Reds' lone run in those frames came on a Ryan Ludwick homer, as he hooked an 82 mph slider inside the left-field pole in the fifth inning to put the Reds ahead, 1-0. Dating back to Friday's series opener, the Reds have scored all six of their runs via home runs.

Gee once again showcased his stellar command as he walked just one batter. During spring training, Gee issued just one walk spanning 16 2/3 innings, with the walk coming in his final start. The right-hander walked a pair in the opener against Washington.

As Gee pitched well, the Mets lineup struggled to string together quality at-bats against Cincinnati's Johnny Cueto. Cueto carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Ruben Tejada doubled to right-center with one out. He threw seven innings.

Curtis Granderson's two-run shot in the sixth inning, a blast into the upper deck in right field that put the Mets up 2-1, was the only blow the Mets landed against Cueto. It marked the first homer and RBIs Granderson has accumulated since joining the Mets.

Once again, the Mets struggled to make contact, as they struck out 10 times, and have struck out 53 times thus far this season. In four of their five games this season, the Mets have struck out at least eight times, and have hit double-digits three times.
