Qualcomm unveils 64
Qualcomm says the new chips -- due in 2015 -- complete its lineup of 64-bit processors.
QualcommQualcomm has introduced its next-gen, highest-performing 64-bit processors packing advanced LTE technology.
The Snapdragon 810 and 808 complete Qualcomm's lineup of 64-bit LTE-equipped chipsets for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, the company said in a statement.
Both chips integrate LTE Advanced Category 6 multimode modems that, theoretically, can offer up to 300 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload speeds. Current 4G LTE technology in the US offers only a fraction of those speeds.
Qualcomm said it is now fully committed to 64-bit processors.
'This announcement underscores Qualcomm Technologies focus on 64-bit leadership...with more details expected to be shared later this year,' the company said in a statement.
The 810 processor, the fastest Snapdragon to date, combines 64-bit quad core ARM Cortex-A57 and Cortex-A53 CPUs (central processing units).
The 810 also uses Qualcomm's new Adreno 430 GPU (graphics processing unit), which is designed to deliver up to 30 percent faster graphics performance, while reducing power consumption by up to 20 percent, as compared to the Adreno 420 GPU.
The Snapdragon 810 and 808 processors will be available as sample shipments in the third quarter of this year and are expected to be available in commercial devices by the first half of 2015, Qualcomm said.
Earlier this year, Qualcomm announced the 64-bit Snapdragon 610 and 615 with standard 4G LTE.
