Alvarez exits after five innings due to stiff elbow
WASHINGTON -- Marlins starter Henderson Alvarez exited after five innings on Wednesday night due to right elbow stiffness.
The Marlins announced the decision to take Alvarez out with a four-run lead against the Nationals was precautionary. Alvarez exited after throwing 62 pitches, 43 for strikes, and with Miami ahead 4-0. He ended up with a no-decision. Alvarez scattered five hits while striking out two.
Miami's rotation already is without ace Jose Fernandez, who is out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
The club has been looking for the rest of the rotation to step up, and Alvarez was doing so on Wednesday night. He lowered his ERA to 2.97.
It was an active night for Alvarez, who fielded three comeback ground balls and reached for a couple of others.
At the plate in the fifth inning, Alvarez slapped a hard grounder to third that was gloved on a diving stop by Anthony Rendon. On the play, Alvarez ran hard to first base, but he walked slowly back to the dugout.
Alvarez went out for the bottom of the fifth inning, and he allowed two singles but got out of the jam by retiring Rendon on a fly ball to center.
Alvarez was relieved by Chris Hatcher in the sixth inning.
