SAN FRANCISCO -- Pablo Sandoval's one-out sixth-inning RBI single broke a scoreless tie and six Giants pitchers combined on a two-hitter as the Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 5-0 on Wednesday at AT&T Park.
Sandoval, who drove in a run for the eighth consecutive game, ripped a two-strike single up the middle against Cubs left-handed reliever James Russell after the Giants had initiated their rally against starter Edwin Jackson (3-5) with Angel Pagan's double to deep center and a walk to Hunter Pence.
After an out, Tyler Colvin provided insurance with an RBI double down the left-field line against right-hander Brian Schlitter to make it 2-0.
The Giants broke it open in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Buster Posey and a two-run double by Hector Sanchez against the Cubs' fourth pitcher, Justin Grimm.
Despite allowing four walks and hitting a batter, Tim Lincecum pitched five no-hit innings to open the game for San Francisco. Lincecum departed for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fifth after throwing 96 pitches, and reliever George Kontos (1-0) carried the no-hitter for another 11/3 innings into the seventh.
Jeremy Affeldt replaced Kontos, however, and gave up a walk to Chris Coghlan and single to right to former De La Salle High standout John Baker. Jean Machi replaced Affeldt and got two outs on three pitches to end the Cubs' threat.
The Giants, owners of baseball's best record at 34-19, completed a six-game homestand with five victories.
