Uplay struggling under Watch Dogs launch logins, servers may be unresponsive

Watch Lags, ha!

It was meant to be the most glorious of days, this, the day of Watch Dogs' launch. Yet just as many games with online functionality have in the past, servers have crumpled under the load of a launch crowd hungry for video games. Ubisoft is reporting that Uplay login servers, while not down, are having difficulties keeping up with the throughput of users trying to log in across all platforms.

The results of the server fluctuations is quit impactful to a degree. Users may skip logging into Uplay and access the game directly, disabling online features like multiplayer, cloud saves and so on. Persistent players can continue to attempt logging in, but may be consistently met with error messages stating the servers have timed out. Again, these issues persist across all platforms.

A secondary issue that has arisen is that Ubisoft's Uplay website was completely crashed earlier today. This was particularly unfortunate, as it was the only place available to download the Uplay client required to access the full Watch Dogs game. Since then, Ubisoft at first provided a direct download link to Uplay on Twitter and then eventually took down the entire website to provide just the Uplay link. Downloading the game on PC should no longer be an issue, beyond speed fluctuations.

Odds are some Watch Dog players will have no issues whatsoever, logging in and playing without worry. Odds are some Watch Dogs players will have a myriad of random issues. It took me 10 attempts to log into Uplay, but afterwards everything but cloud saves worked. This post is just a note for folk who are confused and wondering if it's Ubisoft or them. It's Ubisoft. It's possible that these issues will perpetuate for some time, but hopefully they'll be solved quickly.

Watch Dogs is out on on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
