Amazon Appstore Coming to BlackBerry 10 Phones

Unenthused about the app selection on BlackBerry devices? We have some good news.

BlackBerry on Wednesday announced it has struck a deal with Amazon to bring more than 200,000 Android apps from the online retailer's Appstore to BlackBerry 10 owners. The apps will be available this fall when the BlackBerry 10.3 operating system launches.

'We've heard your appeals for access to more applications for your BlackBerry 10 device and we are delivering,' BlackBerry wrote in a blog post. 'You will be able to access popular apps such as Groupon, Netflix, Pinterest, Candy Crush Saga, and Minecraft - all available for direct download!'

The Canadian company will continue to offer apps through its own store, BlackBerry World, but is closing down the music and video sections on July 21. BlackBerry owners will still be able to access video and music through third-party apps in the Amazon Appstore and BlackBerry World.

For most of BlackBerry 10's first year, you had to go through a complicated series of steps to 'wrap' an Android app to run on BlackBerrys. The 10.2.1 upgrade in late January, however, let BlackBerry phones run Android apps directly.

Amazon earlier this week said its Appstore selection has 'nearly tripled' in the past year to more than 240,000 apps and games. That's still a drop in the bucket compared to Apple's App Store and Google Play, both of which boast roughly 1.2 million apps.

Meanwhile, Amazon is gearing up for a big media event in Seattle today, where it's widely expected to unveil its first-ever smartphone. Head over to PCMag.com at 1 p.m. ET for a live blog of all the action from Amazon's event. Until then, check out 7 Things the Amazon Phone Must Have.
