Looks like Facebook Home is unofficially dead
Facebook Home, Facebook's home screen replacement app for Android, appears to be dead, with The New York Times reporting Friday that Facebook has dismantled the Facebook Home team. The project started as an Android skin for Facebook's unsuccessful phone, the HTC First, which was both the first and the last phone to come with Facebook Home pre-installed.
Facebook later rolled out software from the HTC First into a separate home screen app available on Google Play. Facebook Homewasn't a smashing success, perhaps because it only worked with selected Samsung and HTC devices. After that, some of its best features - like Chat Heads - made its way into the mainstream Facebook app for Android, and now it looks like the experiment is over.
The app is still available from Google Play but is unlikely to be updated in the future, unlike the way Facebook sunsetted its Poke and camera apps, which were pulled from the Apple App Store. Facebook Home's demise comes on the tail of two other tech giants, Yahoo and Samsung, both of which have released their own Android home screen apps this year.
