Cavs countdown: What could happen on draft day
Thursday night at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn New York, the Cavaliers will do what has become routine in recent years: They will make the first pick in the NBA draft.
This is not a broken record; it just seems like it. Cleveland has the top pick for the third time in the past four years. They keep winning the draft lottery but can't seem to win anything on the court to stay out of the lottery.
In 2011, they selected Kyrie Irving of Duke University first overall. The next season they had the 4 th pick and selected Dion Waiter of Syracuse. In 2013, the top choice netted Anthony Bennett, who struggled his rookie year.
This year, it appears to be a two-horse race. Jabari Parker, who played one season with the Duke Blue Devils could be the selection, or it could be Kansas Jayhawk Andrew Wiggins.
Parker looks to be NBA ready, especially on the offensive side. He is polished and poised and knows how to get his shot off. He needs to get more intensity into his defensive efforts.
Wiggins has an amazing ability to leap the highest in the quickest amount of time. If he is taken, it will be fun to see his development over the next several years as he has not even scratched the surface as to how good he can be.
Parker had a workout in Cleveland last Friday and there are reports that he did not give a maximum effort and that he doesn't want to play in Cleveland. His father disputes that assertion, saying his son always goes 100 percent.
Joel Embiid, the seven footer from Kansas was early on, considered by many to be the consensus number one pick, but it was revealed last week he had a broken bone in his foot and needed surgery. Now there is no telling which team might take him because he previously had back issues.
The Cavaliers could also trade out of the number one spot to enhance their assets.
Make no mistake about this. The Cavaliers, with the hiring of Euroleague coaching sensation David Blatt, don't want to have to be in any kind of draft lottery conversation after next season. They have to find a way to make their kids grow up fast and be productive.
