Daily Jolt, June 2: Fisher to pursue 'calling' in front office

The Thunder's season-ending Game 6 loss to the Spurs on Saturday night finally made veteran guard Derek Fisher available for the high-profile coaching vacancies he has been linked to as a leading candidate in recent weeks. During his emotional season-ending press conference, Fisher revealed his desire to be a coach and team president. Both the Knicks and the Lakers are expected to pursue Fisher this summer. The Lakers may want Fisher for the front office, and Fisher lives in Los Angeles and has four young children, while Knicks president Phil Jackson said Friday there were 'a lot of unknowns' with Fisher's willingness to move his family to New York. It's hard to envision Derek Jeter being able to stomach the everyday media responsibilities of being a manager or GM once his playing days are over, but the Yankees shortstop may have his eye on another way to stay in baseball following his retirement at the end of the season. The longtime Yankees' captain would like to be an owner one day. 'That's the next goal, buddy,' he said at his 18th annual Turn 2 Foundation dinner in Midtown Manhattan Sunday night. 'Calling the shots, not answering to someone, that's what interests me. I'd like to think I would be good one.' When asked if he would be interested in owning the Yankees if the team was ever put up for sale, he joked, 'You got some money for me?' (New York Post) Comment

Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin's show-stopping offensive skill may have to take a backseat to more conservative team play under Washington's new head coach Barry Trotz, who became the team's fourth coach in the past four years last month. Trotz was renowned for his defensive systems as head coach in Nashville, where the Predators played a disciplined, if sometimes dry, style of hockey that led to seven playoff appearances in eight seasons between 2004 and 2012. 'I have yet to see one guy who's not out to win the Stanley Cup. There has to be some give-and-take, some buy in...that's a big part of it. Or it won't sit well with me,' said Trotz. Despite those ominous words, Trotz noted that as the franchise cornerstone, Ovechkin receives too much blame or credit no matter the outcome on the ice on a particular night.
