Joker Phillips resigns as Florida WR coach; Chris Leak is in
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - After a season as the wide receivers coach at Florida, Joker Phillips resigned on Wednesday and Gators coach Will Muschamp named Chris Leak as his replacement.
Leak was a record-setting quarterback at Florida who led the Gators to the 2006 national title in his senior season.
'I'm thankful for the opportunity that the University of Florida and Will Muschamp provided to me and my family, but at this time I have decided to step down from my position on the UF coaching staff for personal reasons,' Phillips said in a statement released by the school.
Muschamp also released a statement.
'I appreciate Joker's contributions to our program and wish him and his wife, Leslie, nothing but the best in the future,' Muschamp said.
Phillips joined the Gators staff in December 2012 after stepping down at Kentucky as head coach.
Leak, a captain on the national title team, ended his career as the school's all-time leading passer in (11,213 yards, 895 completions and 1,458 attempts) and rejoined the program as a graduate assistant in 2013.
'Chris is a bright young coach,' Muschamp said. 'He is one of the all-time Gator greats and being at Florida is very important to him. He has been working with Coach (Kurt) Roper and our offensive staff and is very familiar with our players and new system.'
