'The Leftovers' has a little fun with the Rapture

The winner for most inventive cameo appearances goes to 'The Leftovers.'

The debut episode of the serious HBO show, which airs Sunday night, features a humorous scene where a barroom TV subtly runs a celebrity tribute to famous people who were among the 2% of the population who disappeared in a catastrophic event believed to be the Rapture.

Among the A-listers snatched up in their prime are Jennifer Lopez (1969-?), Bonnie Raitt (1949-?) Shaquille O'Neal (1972-?), Pope Benedict (1927-?) and Gary Busey (1944-?).

'The Leftovers' comes from 'Lost' creator Damon Lindelof and is based on Tom Perrotta's novel of the same name.

In the series, the Rapture, which could easily be read as a metaphor of 9/11, comes off as too random to be the Rapture and leaves those behind seeking a reason why some people disappeared while others did not.

And much like the post 9/11 world - people have become deeply polarized.

Many have tried to move on, while others dwell so deeply on the event and its ramifications that they've joined strange cults in which they stalk nonmembers hoping to find new devotees who will join them while they wait for the end of the world.

On the show, Justin Theroux plays Kevin Garvey, the chief of police in a fictional New York suburb, and heads an ensemble cast that includes television veteran Amy Brenneman and Liv Tyler in her first TV role.
