Marino joins concussion suit
PHILADELPHIA - Dan Marino, the Hall of Fame quarterback for the Dolphins and one of the NFL's highest-profile alums, has joined the ranks of ex-players suing the league over concussion-related injuries, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
Marino, who played from 1983-99, is an analyst on CBS' pregame studio show, NFL Today.
In court filings late last week, Marino, 52, claimed league officials had long been aware of the long-term effects of repeated hits to the head but ignored those warnings and put players' health at risk.
But unlike some of the more than 5,000 ex-players who have filed suit in federal court in Philadelphia, Marino did not specify any explicit condition he has had in his post-football career.
Marino and his lawyer, Sol Weiss, one of the attorneys who last year negotiated a proposed $765 million settlement with the league, could not be reached for comment Monday.
In the suit, the former players have alleged that NFL officials hid the dangers or repeated hits to the head while mythologizing the violence of their sport.
Giants waive ex-Gator: The Giants waived suspended safety Will Hill, a former Florida standout who was suspended by the NFL for violating substance abuse policy. This ban, handed down last week, is for six games in the upcoming season. He missed the opening four games of 2013 while under a similar suspension. Signed by the Giants as a free agent in 2012, Hill played in 24 games for the team and made 10 last season. The New Jersey native went undrafted out of UF in 2011, in part because of off-field issues.
Cardinals: Expressing 'extreme' disappointment in Daryl Washington, coach Bruce Arians says he won't talk again this season about the standout inside linebacker, who has been suspended a year for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
Jets: The team signed safety Calvin Pryor, its first-round draft pick, to a four-year contract. Terms weren't disclosed but based on the rookie slotting system, the deal for the No. 18 overall selection out of Louisville is worth about $8.56 million, including a $4.5 million signing bonus, and is fully guaranteed.
Patriots: Second-round pick QB Jimmy Garoppolo signed a four-year contract. He won last year's Walter Payton Award as the Division I-AA player of the year.
Seahawks: Linebacker Bruce Irvin had hip surgery, and the team had no timetable on his return. Irvin started all 12 games last season for the Super Bowl champions after serving a four-game suspension at the start.
