Nissan, Honda Add More Than 2 Million Vehicles to Air
Bloomberg News
Honda Motor Co. (7267) and Nissan Motor Co. (7201) recalled more than 2 million vehicles to repair flaws in Takata Corp. (7312) air bags initially called back last year, adding to a recall by Toyota Motor Corp. (7203) earlier this month.
Honda's announcement covers 2.03 million vehicles, including the Fit compact worldwide, the carmaker said today in a statement. Nissan said about 130,000 units, including the Cube, need to be fixed.
The recalls put the total of vehicles found with defective air bags made by Takata at more than 4 million units. Scrutiny of potential safety flaws is on the rise across the auto industry, with facing investigations for its recall of almost 2.6 million cars for faulty ignition switches.
Takata pared an earlier gain in Tokyo trading after the Japanese carmakers made the announcements. The shares were up 2.9 percent at 2,112 yen at 2:36 p.m. in Tokyo trading, after rising to as high as 2,133 yen before the 2 p.m. announcement.
Carmakers called back more than 3 million vehicles, including 1.73 million for Toyota and 1.14 million for Honda, in April last year because of defective air bag inflators supplied by Tokyo-based Takata.
Toyota this month said 2.27 million of its cars worldwide are affected by the recall. A recall last year didn't include all vehicles affected by the defective air bag inflators, Toyota has said.
Last year's recall was the Takata's biggest since 1995, the company's spokesman Hideyuki Matsumoto said at the time.
