Philips says it won UK patent suit against Nintendo
Philips Electronics says it has won its first patent infringement lawsuits leveled at Nintendo for Wii's system of motion control.
The initial victory was achieved in the United Kingdom, Philips spokesperson Bjorn Teuwsen told Reuters. Three more cases are in progress around the world.
Teuwsen said the dispute was over 'a patent for motion, gesture and pointing control that we make available to manufacturers of set-top boxes and games consoles through a licensing programme'.
'We'd been trying to come to a licencing agreement with Nintendo since 2011, but since it didn't work out we started legal action in Germany and the UK in 2012, France in 2013 and in the US last month,' Teuwsen said.
The firm has requested 'fair compensation' for Nintendo's alleged use of its patents. Teuwsen declined to give any financial specifics.
Philips announced in May that it was suing Nintendo of America over two motion control-related patents.
Philips has requested that Nintendo compensate it for damages caused by its two alleged infringements, as well as a ban on the company selling any products that infringe on the patent in North America.
