In a landmark decision, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has canceled six federal trademark registrations of the Washington Redskins, finding that their nickname is 'disparaging of Native Americans.'

The decision came as a result of a complaint filed by five Native Americans to the USPTO Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, who issued a ruling on Wednesday morning on behalf of the plaintiff, Amanda Blackhorse.

The Washington football team can appeal the decision in federal court. The registrations and trademarks will remain in place until a judicial review is completed.
