The 21-year-old British singer's rendition focused on his soulful chops and meaningful interpretation of Houston's well-loved music.

But prior to his live appearance and the release of his debut album, ' Grey's Anatomy' first featured Smith's rendition of 'How Will I Know' in one of their episodes last season, Hollywood Life reported.

In a previous interview with Rolling Stone, Smith admitted that 'How Will I Know' is one of his most favorite Houston songs.

'A Whitney Houston song that makes me happy - it's a feel-good song. I love the juxtaposition of a melancholy lyric with an upbeat sound. People forget that's how she rose to fame. The more mature Whitney, like 'I Will Always Love You' came later,' he said.

Following the release of his album, Smith has received positive feedback from critics and fans. Billboard wrote, 'Smith bares more than his vocal cords on his record. Every story of unrequited love that's been put to song is powerful on its own right.'

MusicOMH added, 'It's universally accessible, and it's the kind of pop that has the potential to dominate the charts and win over hearts during festival slots.'

Australian singer/rapper Iggy Azalea has also praised Smith's first album. 'It's a really great record!' the 'Fancy' singer noted.

Unfortunately, Smith, who was supposed to perform live at the Capital Summertime Ball on Saturday, June 21, had to cancel his appearance after losing his voice, according to Entertainment Wise.

He broke the devastating news to his fans via his Facebook page and wrote, 'I am so sad today. I won't be performing today. I've just got out of the plane and my voice has completely gone. This is the first show I've ever had to cancel and I am praying that it is the last. I really love to avoid any long term damage to my voice.'
