See Channing Tatum morph from a rom
He's come a long way, baby. Most of us met Channing Tatum circa 2006, when (often shirtless) he was sporting some serious moves in light fare like Step Up. But a lot has gone down since then, and with the news that Tatum scored a role in the Coen brothers' next movie, Hail Caesar!, we figured it was time to decode his truly impressive career strategy.
2006: Step Up
The dance movie, which has spawned a whole bad-but-in-a-good-way franchise, makes no one street-cred-famous except Tatum. (But there's a big bonus: His co-star, Jenna Dewan, eventually becomes his wife.)
2008: Stop-Loss
Tatum nabs a role as a soldier in Stop-Loss, which was supposed to be a star vehicle for Ryan Phillippe, but failed to impress at the box office. Silver lining! The role catches director Michael Mann's eye, and he casts Tatum in 2009′s Public Enemies opposite Johnny Depp. A career-making turn in 2009′s G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra follows, delivering Tatum's first box office take of over $100 million. In Hollywood-speak: He's a leading man now!
2010: Dear John
A war hero, again! But this time, one focused on love. Off-screen, Tatum begins to rev up his own production company.
2012: The year everyone started taking Channing Tatum seriously
This is The Year of Tatum: First came The Vow, a teary by-the-numbers Valentine's Day tale, followed by 21 Jump Street.
'I know I'm not the best actor. But I hope my characters are getting better,' Tatum humbly told Details that year. 'You gotta do the Dear Johns. You gotta do The Vow,' he added. 'I'm conscious about why I did those parts, those movies ... I wanted to learn from Rachel (McAdams) on The Vow. I wanted to learn from Lasse Hallström on Dear John - he did The Cider House Rules and What's Eating Gilbert Grape.'
Then came the Big Kahuna.
That would be Tatum's semi-biographical movie, Magic Mike. Loosely based on Tatum's early days as a stripper, the project aligns Tatum with director Steven Soderbergh, and fans were rabid for A) those grin-inducing marketing materials and B) Well, the stripping.
'You know, the guy had three movies do a hundred million dollars in six months-nobody's ever done that,' Soderbergh told GQ.
In 2013, Channing Tatum re-teams with Soderbergh on one of the director's final film projects, Side Effects. But White House Down, his action flick with Jamie Foxx, bombs. Suddenly, people start questioning Tatum's lasting power.
Channing gets to work, shooting four films back-to-back: Foxcatcher, directed by Moneyball's Bennett Miller; the $150 mil sci-fi flick Jupiter Ascending (from the Wachowski sibings); and 22 Jump Street.
May 2014: Cannes...and comics!
After several delays, Foxcatcher finally makes its debut at Cannes. The film is a triumph, with Tatum starring as Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz. Post-Cannes, Sony Pictures Classics plants a wide release in the heart of awards season (Nov. 14). Oh! And conveniently, Marvel also finally reveals Tatum is their man to play X-Men 's Gambit next.
June 21, 2014: Sun's out, guns out
The bro-tastic 22 Jump Street wins big at the box office, and the sequel manages to capture many a begrudging critic's heart. It did brisk business and has currently made back three times its budget.
A slight bump in the grand plan: Jupiter Ascending, meant to drop this July, is moved at the last minute to February 2015. (Official reason: the CGI ain't ready.) But a February release date is Hollywood signaling the movie could be a blockbuster-sized bust.
June 24, 2014: The Coen brothers start knocking
Oh, to be anointed by the Coens. Hail Caesar!, according to THR, is a 1950s-set Hollywood film that will star George Clooney as a fixer who works for the big studios. Tatum's part is described as a 'Gene Kelly type,' Ralph Fiennes will play a studio director and Tilda Swinton a gossip columnist.
'What I actually respect about this entire business,' Tatum told GQ, 'is the hustle of it all and how many people have carved out their purposes in it. Somehow I carved out a place for myself in it.'
Keep at it, Chan.
