Wii U system update released, adds quick start menu

Nintendo has begun rolling out Wii U system update 5.0.0.

Available now in the Americas but seemingly not yet in Europe, its flagship feature is the addition of a new quick start menu.

In response to frustration expressed by console owners over the operating system's sluggishness, Nintendo said earlier this year that a number of Wii U system updates were in the works to remedy loading times.

The quick start option enables users to fast load titles from a new menu of recently played game icons on the Gamepad screen. Users can tap the game they wish to play, then select the Mii representing their Nintendo account, before the system launches directly into the title, bypassing the main home menu.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said earlier this year: 'We think that this function will make you feel that the time to start up a Wii U software title is cut by more than 50 per cent, and that it will also lead to more Wii U users understanding the appealing nature of the GamePad.'

Wii U system update 5.0.0 A Quick Start Menu is now displayed when users press the GamePad POWER Button or HOME Button to power on the Wii U. Users can start recently played or newly installed software directly from the Quick Start Menu. The Quick Start Menu is only displayed when the Wii U GamePad POWER or HOME Buttons are pressed. Other controllers, such as the Wii Remote Plus and Wii U Pro Controller, will continue to power on the Wii U Wii U GamePad Alerts (special notifications from Nintendo) can be displayed on the GamePad when the Wii U is powered down. Users will be notified with an audio ringtone when a new GamePad Alert is displayed. GamePad Alerts that have been received can also be viewed through the Quick Start Menu.
