EPIC files complaint with FTC against Facebook's experiment on mood ...
In a formal complaint filed with the U. S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Thursday, privacy group Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) has alleged that Facebook social network 'purposefully messed with people's minds.'
The accusation leveled by the EPIC against Facebook comes in reference to Facebook's controversial psychological study carried in a 'secretive and non-consensual' in 2012. The study essentially marked Facebook's experiment on mood manipulation.
The experiment was carried out by Facebook - from January 11 to January 18, 2012 - on nearly 700,000 English-speaking users, whose emotions were deliberately manipulated by the company which altered their News Feeds for research purposes.
With the study having been widely criticized by privacy advocates as well as Facebook users, the EPIC has asked the FTC to impose sanctions on Facebook.
Pointing out that the study violated terms of a 20-year consent decree which requires the protection of users' privacy by the social network, the EPIC said in its complaint that Facebook should be forced to disclose the algorithms which it uses for determining what content appears in News Feeds of the users.
Seeking an urgent investigation into the matter, the EPIC said that the controversial Facebook experiment on mood manipulation 'failed to follow standard ethical protocols for human subject research.'
