Giants activate Brandon Belt from DL, bat him second

Brandon Belt's bat is back in the San Francisco lineup. (USATSI) More: San Francisco needs the old Cain

The San Francisco Giants have reinstated first baseman Brandon Belt from the disabled list while also continuing their altered lineup.

Hunter Pence was recently moved to the leadoff spot in the order, and he'll now be followed by Belt. Belt is batting second Friday and manager Bruce Bochy told reporters ( MLB.com) that this would be the plan moving forward. Belt has hit second eight times this season, but Pence's first time hitting at the top was Thursday, so the duo at the top is a new look.

Belt, 26, has been out since May 9 due to a fractured left thumb that required surgery to repair. He's hitting .264/.317/504 (134 OPS+) with nine homers and 18 RBI in 35 games this season.

In seven minor-league rehab games, Belt hit .520/.571/1.000 with three doubles, three homers and six RBI. Needless to say, he's more than ready to be back in the majors.

The Giants were 23-13 when Belt fell injured and are now 47-38, trailing the Dodgers by a half-game in the NL West.
