Luis Suarez offers apology for biting Giorgio Chiellini at World Cup
ESPN
The World Cup's biggest villain is trying to make amends.
Luis Suarez, the Uruguayan striker who inspired memes and outrage around the world after he chomped down on the shoulder of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini is admitting to his mistake and apologizing.
In a statement released via Twitter, directly from Suarez, the striker expressed 'deep regret' but stopped short of admitting that the bite was intentional.
'The truth is that my colleague Giorgio Chiellini suffered the physical result of a bite in the (collision) he suffered with me,' Suarez wrote.
Suarez could earn $68 million playing for Barcelona, but the top-flight Spanish team first wants to include a 'bite clause' in any contract before bringing the striker in via transfer from Liverpool.
Suarez was handed down a lengthy ban from FIFA after the incident in the finale of the group stage, including a four-month suspension from the sport as well as a nine intentional matches and a $111,000 fine. Chiellini called the ban excessive, and responded to Suarez's apology on Monday by saying he hopes FIFA will reduce Suarez's ban.
The Uruguayan vowed that there would never be an incident like this again but after three biting incidents in the past four years, it's hard to believe he has changed his ways.
He returned home last Thursday to a crowd of 1,000-plus supporters, including the president of Uruguay.
