Red Sox trade rumors: Boston discussing Jon Lester

The Red Sox and Dodgers are considering a blockbuster trade that would send left-hander Jon Lester to Los Angeles and outfielder Matt Kemp to Boston, as first reported by Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com. Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes that no significant discussions have taken place between the two sides about that deal, with multiple league sources reiterating that no deal appears imminent between the two teams.
The Red Sox, who are thought to be aggressively jumping into the sellers' market in advance of Thursday's deadline, are listening on Lester, who would be their most valuable trade chip if they decided to move him. He is a free agent after the season and is reportedly open to re-signing with the Red Sox, meaning that Boston could look to acquire a few strong players in exchange for two months of his services with the ultimate goal still being to re-sign Lester this winter.
Kemp, along with top prospect Joc Pederson, has drawn interest from the Red Sox, who have seen a lack of offensive production from their outfield all season. The Mariners are also reportedly considering adding Kemp in addition to the Rangers and Indians, with the Dodgers aggressive in their attempt to shop him.
The Red Sox and Dodgers matched up on one of the biggest blockbusters in recent history two years ago, when Boston sent Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez and Nick Punto to Los Angeles for a handful of prospects. The two sides seem to be having preliminary discussions about another megadeal this summer, but it appears it is too early to tell if anything will get done before Thursday's 4 p.m. deadline.
