If summer is the season of the inner child, when 'Guardians of the Galaxy,' 'Transformers 4' and 'Maleficent' top the box office, then fall, when the kids are back in school, is the season for the adult drama. Hollywood is obliging especially this weekend with two R-rated wide releases vying for the ticket-sales crown. 'Gone Girl' and 'Annabelle' are in a close race for first, but a surge in interest could put 20th Century Fox's murder mystery in the top spot.
With David Fincher behind the camera and Ben Affleck in front of it-not to mention Gillian Flynn's best-selling novel as source material-'Gone Girl' could have the edge this weekend. Fincher's last three movies are among his top four at the box office: 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' made more than $230 million worldwide, with 'The Social Network' earning almost $225 million and 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' topping $333 million. Meanwhile, Affleck's last major outing was 'Argo,' the Oscar-winning flick that grossed more than $232 million globally.
Appearing in 3,014 theaters, per Box Office Mojo, their $61 million collaboration was selling advance tickets on pace with 'Gravity' as of Wednesday. That blockbuster busted out with $55.8 million on this weekend a year ago. But 'Gone Girl' has a couple of things working against it: It's rated R, which limits its potential audience, and the older women who are most keen to see it won't necessarily rush out on opening weekend. Still, Fox's forecast of around $20 million seems modest. With an 85 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the psychological thriller could push into the mid-$20 millions.
