John Clayton discusses 12
Despite interest from 'a couple of teams', former NFL standout cornerback Champ Bailey has decided to retire from the NFL to pursue other career opportunities, his agent Jack Reale said Tuesday.
'At this time, Champ has decided not to accept on-field opportunities and pursue another career path,' Reale said. 'He could be playing right now if he wanted to be.'
Instead, the clock will start running until the time of his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
'To play the end of this season and maybe next season, given his opportunities, he could have done that,' Reale said. 'But he decided it was best to move on to those other areas. I think everybody on his team agreed that was a good approach.'
Bailey had been in training camp with the New Orleans Saints this season, but failed to make the roster.
Bailey played last season for the Denver Broncos, but was released to open up cap space as the 12-time Pro Bowler had been expected to make around $10 million this season.
Bailey was sidelined for most of the 2013 season due to a nagging left foot sprain. The 36-year-old shutdown corner returned late in the season to help the Broncos advance to the Super Bowl, where they lost 43-8 to Seattle.
Bailey was acquired in 2004 by the Broncos in a deal that sent running back Clinton Portis to the Washington Redskins.
