Kenneth Faried, Nuggets reach 5
The big man will secure his future after a strong summer with USA Basketball.
The question as to whether the Nuggets would lock up Kenneth Faried long-term after floating him in trade rumors has been answered. Yahoo!'s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Nuggets and Faried have reached agreement on a five-year, $60 million extension that will kick in with the 2015-16 season. The final season has a partial guarantee, so Faried's guaranteed salary from the extension will be $52 million.
A three-year veteran out of Morehead State, Faried is a brilliant rebounder, solid defender and high-energy workman for Denver. Nicknamed 'The Manimal,' he'll turn 25 in November, which means this deal will take him up to the age of 30, assuming that final season is picked up. What's more, he's totally tradable on this contract as it is just about market value for a starting above-average big man.
The Nuggets, led by GM Tim Connelly, now have four players in the $10-12 million salary range: Faried, JaVale McGee, Ty Lawson and Danilo Gallinari. Arron Afflalo can become a free agent next July, as well, which could add a bit more salary pressure to Denver.
