Top 25 Poll analysis: Mississippi State, Ole Miss fit to be tied at No. 3 after big wins
To say there was a shakeup in this week's AP Top 25 Poll would be akin to describing Dak Prescott as an ordinary quarterback. The seismic activity that took place, a shift resoundingly felt in Mississippi, resulted in movement among 23 of last week's ranked teams. That is what happens when six of the top eight teams and 11 of the top 25 go down in defeat. Magnolia State of delirium There is one way to jolt a hangover in Mississippi today: show fans in Oxford and Starkville the Top 25. Then allow for the celebration to begin anew. It has been that type of weekend capped by Mississippi State (two first-place votes) climbing nine spots and Ole Miss eight to bring them appropriately together in a tie at No. 3. The Bulldogs, who took apart Texas A&M, have never been ranked so high, while the Rebels' win over Alabama lifted them to heights they have not seen since 1963. There will be very little time to settle down, at least in Starkville, with No. 2 Auburn dropping by Saturday.Familiar pairing Nearly nine months to the day of the final installment of the BCS championship game, Florida State and Auburn find themselves No. 1 and No. 2 once again. The Seminoles, whose lead over Auburn is all of two points, blasted Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon. A few hours later, Tigers blew past LSU and -- combined with Oregon, Alabama and Oklahoma each going down in defeat -- rose three spots to No. 2.
Unprecedented climb Since the AP expanded from 20 to 25 teams in 1989, never had a team gone from being unranked to the top 10 in one week. That is until Arizona, with its win at then-No. 2 Oregon on Thursday night, a victory that triggered the dominoes, zoomed up the charts to No. 10. The Wildcats entered the weekend with the 29th-most voting points. Leapfrog TCU just about matched Arizona's distinction. By holding off then-No. 4 Oklahoma in Fort Worth, the Horned Frogs went from bringing up the rear at No. 25 to landing at No. 9. With respect to teams that were already ranked, this marked the week's big gain at 16 spots. Fallout Whether they remained in the Top 25 or fell out, a remarkable seven teams plummeted at least 10 spots. Oregon was one of them. While the Crimson Tide fell four places to No. 7 and the Sooners seven to No. 11, Oregon dropped 10 rungs on the ladder to No. 12. The hardest hit was Wisconsin, which doubled down from No. 17 to No. 34, or ninth among those outside the poll receiving votes, after losing at Northwestern. newsandtalking.blogspot.com Top 25 Poll, Week 6 -- Oct. 5, 2014*First-place votes in parentheses 1.
