Verizon and Motorola took the wraps off the latest smartphone in the Droid line, the Droid Turbo.
The Droid Turbo is designed for extended battery life, and Motorola says the phone can last 48 hours - two full days - of normal use. The 'monster size' battery has a huge 3,800 milliamp-hours (mAh) of power (by comparison, the iPhone 6 Plus is rated at 2,915mAh), and the life is extended even further via software that optimizes ever watt, according to the company.
The battery charges fast, too. Borrowing a feature first seen on the company's Moto X, the Droid Turbo includes Turbo Charge, which turns a 15-minute charge into an additional 8 hours of battery life.
The Droid Turbo joins the elite class of top-tier of phones that boast a Quad HD display, with 2,560 x 1,440 pixels. This marks the first Quad HD phone from Motorola. The screen measures 5.2 inches.
To push all those pixels, the Droid Turbo packs a 2.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor. A Verizon exclusive, the phone is compatible with the carrier's high-speed XLTE network. It runs Android 4.4 'KitKat,' and Verizon says it's guaranteed to get the version 5.0 'Lollipop' update.
The camera is a 21-megapixel imager. It can capture 4K-quality video, and you can activate the camera with just a flick of the wrist. The front-facing camera is 2 megapixels, able to record 1080p video.
Like previous Droids, the Turbo has a kevlar backside, which is resistant to damage. It's also water resistant.
The phone also includes 'Droid Zap,' the special ability to share photos to a geofenced cloud for others to download. Any Android phone can get the shares as long as they have the Droid Zap app.
The phone comes in both 32GB and 64GB versions. For 32GB, it's available in metallic black, metallic red and ballistic nylon for $199 with a two-year contract or $25 a month for 24 months. The 64GB version is $249 with a contract and $27 a month; it's only available in ballistic nylon.
Verizon teased the Droid Turbo in a video featuring actor James Franco just hours before the event. The video is below.
