TWC News: Comptroller: CitiBike Stations, Bikes Not Being Properly MaintainedPlay now

As CitiBike gears up to expand, the city comptroller says both the stations and the bikes are not being properly maintained.

According to a new audit from City Comptroller Scott Stringer, the operator of the popular CitiBike program did not properly maintain its bikes and stations from May of last year through May of this year.

All the bikes are supposed to be checked at least once a month, but Stringer's office says that has not happened.

He says that puts people at risk.

In November 2013, for example, he says only 28 percent of bikes were inspected.

'The audit showed that this, that the city bike maintenance and oversight of the company leaves a lot to be desired,' Stringer said. 'There has to be marketed improvement. I hope that this audit will enable the Department of Transportation to work with new ownership, new management to make the CitiBike program effective and successful.'

The audit recommends that CitiBike hire more staff so it can keep up with inspections and ensure stations and bikes are properly maintained.
