Sy Berger, who invented the Topps baseball card, dies
Sy Berger, the father of the modern baseball card, died Sunday in Rockville Centre. He was 91.
In the 1950s, Berger used scissors and cardboard at his kitchen table as he played around with ideas for trading cards until he devised a design for Topps that endured for decades: team logos and a fake player autograph on the front with stats on the back.
'We wanted to make something attractive that would catch the eye,' he said in 2002. He did not comment on why so many parents threw out whole collections of possibly priceless cards.
Berger is survived by his wife, three children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
